The Best Electric Bikes
Often known as an E-bike, electric bikes are power-assisted (up to 15mph) to provide relief when cycling. People usually purchase E-bikes if they are commuting long distances (and therefore don’t turn up to work so sweaty), recovering from an injury or illness and need the extra boost, or simply to make exercising that bit more fun. Whatever your reason is, there are thousands of options to choose from, so we’ve made finding the perfect model that bit easier by selecting our best electric bikes.
What Do You Need To Know?
One thing you need to look out for is how many assisted miles you get on one battery charge, as the average battery takes 3-4 hours to fully recharge. Bosch and Panasonic make fantastic lithium-ion batteries for many top electric bikes, so keep an eye out for these when browsing.

Another factor is the weight. Even though the technology has come quite far, the batteries are still heavy and add a noticeable amount of weight to the bike. Be sure to visit a store and get a feel for a range of models, so you know which models you’re comfortable with.
Finally, many electric bike models will come with a step-through frame option, making it more comfortable to mount/dismount the bike. However, this usually means the battery is located in the rear carrier, so you may prefer a different frame style so your battery is on the frame in the middle of the bike (most people prefer this as the bike feels more stable when the weight is in the centre).
Best Hardtail E-MTBs
Hardtail mountain biking is a lot of fun. And trust us, it gets more fun with a little boost! A hardtail electric mountain bike is definitely for you if you want more speed and longer endurance when tackling the hills. We've picked out some models you are going to love.
Although accompanied by a rather scary price tag, the E-Aspect 710 is our top choice for a hardtail E-MTB. Stunning designed coupled with outstanding features means this bike deserves top dollar (well, pounds). The lightweight 6061 alloy frame is perfectly designed to incorporate the battery, which is well-disguised, out of the way and much more slender than other makes.
The battery is a 250w Brose system, specifically designed for the E-Aspect range. There are multiple modes of power available, all easily controlled on the Brose display screen on the handlebars. Fox Float 32 forks feature (with remote lockout for ease of use), providing superb cushioning on all trails. We could write about how amazing this bike is forever, so click on the image above to see all details.
With geometrical differences to suite female riders, the E-Contessa Scale is the perfect hardtail E-MTB for women. Although the battery is not as well-disguised as the E-Aspect 710, it's still beautifully designed and packs a lot of punch. Powered by a Bosch Performance CX motor, it is designed to cope better in off-road situations, with faster acceleration and better protection off the drive system. 10 speed Shimano SLX Deore gearing coupled with a powerful battery means you can take on any terrain, while extra wide Maxxis Reckon tyres provide excellent grip in almost all conditions. A fantastic bike which deserves a test ride to show you what it is made of.
Fancy taking on the toughest terrain out there? Full-suspension electric mountain bikes allow you to do just that. With boosted acceleration to take you up steep inclines, and suspension in the front and rear to cushion those dips along the way, you can conquer the hills in no time.
The Merida eOne Sixty 800 is first to feature in this section. The flashy bullet-silver design isn't the only wow-factor; the Shimano Steps E8000 battery packs 250 watts and delivers a strong boost when needed. On top of that, the Merida Expert dropper seat post allows you to adjust riding height from your handlebars. A useful touch of luxury we think. Rock Shox super deluxe rear suspension offers outstanding cushioning, while the travel on the front forks is very generous...as you can see for yourself. The 2.8" Maxxis DHR tyres offer unbeatable grip and control, making it a super enjoyable ride in all conditions.
Also featuring the Shimano Steps E8000 drive system, the E-Spark 720 Plus is a stunningly engineered machine. Rock Shox Sektor RL air forks with 130mm travel offer more than generous front suspension, and they pair perfectly with X-Fusion NUDE rear shock, by working simultaneously with Scott's patented Twinloc System which allows the rider to lock front and rear suspension simultaneously. Shimano Deore hydraulic brakes provide superb stopping power when needed, and Shimano Shadow Plus 10-speed gearing allows you to take on the inclines. All of this fantastic bike weighs in at just 22.4kg, surprisingly light when you consider the weight of the battery and full suspension. In short, this beast will tame any trails you throw at it.
